INTRODUCTION
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wouldn't it be nice to print a text file in one of the many
available Amiga bitmapped fonts instead of draft courier or
one of the printers internal DRAFT or NLQ/ LQ fonts? 'FTP'
let's you do just that! Imagine printing a text file in
an LQ CAMELOT font! It's easy using 'FTP'. 'FTP' basically
converts, then uploads an Amiga bitmapped font to your printer:
Font To Printer. 'FTP' can also be used to 'toggle' your
printer back and forth between an uploaded font(s) or the
printer's internal fonts.

FEATURES
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------
Standard features include:
--------------------------
o - Multitasks.
o - Uses standard INTUITION interfaces.
o - Adjusts to different WORKBENCH environments.
o - Uses standard system printer preferences while printing.
-------------------------
Special features include:
-------------------------
o - Uses the 'SOFTCONFIG' environment.
o - Uses the 'PRINTERPREFS' environment.
-------------------------
Program features include:
-------------------------
o - Upload any Amiga bitmapped font to the printer.
o - View any Amiga bitmapped font before uploading.
o - Specify uploaded font quality.
o - Specify only printable characters to be uploaded.
o - Create a special printer font file from the Amiga bitmapped
font.
o - Select from one of two different font compression/ expansion
routines. (Scales the font to the printer. More will be
added in later releases).
o - Select/ deselect the uploaded font without re-uploading
it or resetting your printer via command line options.

USING FTP
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------
Getting Started:
----------------
You can start 'FTP' from the supplied icon, of from the CLI/ Shell
using:
>Run FTP
... if you specify the font/size to upload, 'FTP' will begin uploading
the font immediately.
(Please refer to the online help file for more information.)
--------
Options:
--------
These option are available from the CLI/ Shell.
-r ............. Use the printer's internal default character set.
-s ............. Use the uploaded character set.
(For information on 'TOOLTYPES' please refer to the online help file.)
----------------
Pull-Down Menus:
----------------
Project Menu:
-------------
Upload ......... Begin uploading a selected font to the printer.
About ......... Program credits & info.
View ......... View the selected font.
Quit ......... Exit 'FTP'.
Upload Menu:
------------
Quality/Draft .. Select draft upload quality.
Quality/NLQ .... Select NLQ upload quality.
Alpha Only ..... Upload only standard characters.
Create File .... Create a printer font file from the selected font.
Special Menu:
-------------
Reset Printer .. Use the printer's internal default character set.
Cmp./Std. ...... Use standard compression (faster than scaling).
Cmp./Scaling ... Use 'scaling' compression.
-----------
Setting Up:
-----------
Before attempting to upload a font to your printer, be sure your
printer's internal RAM buffer is not allocated for incoming data.
Check your printer's manual for more information.
--------
Viewing:
--------
You can view a font before uploading it by 'activating' (placing a
check mark) beside the "Project/View" option: each time you select
this option, it will toggle back and forth. The display window
will not open until a font has been selected. The selected font
will be displayed in this window. Use this option to view each
font before making your final decision.
----------
Uploading:
----------
To begin uploading the selected font, click on the "[ OK ]" gadget
(button) or press [RETURN]. Depending on the size of the font, and
the option selected, it could take 20 seconds or more to complete
the upload process. If at anytime you cancel the upload, the
printer will be reset to use it's own internal character set.
However, be sure to fully reset the printer before attempting the
upload again.
If you only want to upload printable characters (ie., a-z, A-Z, 0-9
etc.,) then 'activate' the "Upload/Alpha Only" option.
If you want to create a special printer font file in the default
'FONTS:printer' directory, 'activate' the "Upload/Create File"
option.
To cancel uploading at any time, click on the "[ Cancel ]" gadget
(button).
---------
Printing:
---------
When printing out text files, make sure the quality of the uploaded
font (DRAFT or NLQ) matches the print quality (see DRAFT or LETTER
from the within the system preferences program 'PRINTER'). If not,
the printed characters will not look quite right. This goes for
other programs that set the printer's quality mode directly.
'FTP' will always default the upload quality to that of your
preferences setting.
--------
Testing:
--------
After uploading a font, you can test the quality by clicking on the
"[ Test Print ]" gadget (button).
------------
Compression:
------------
The compression routines allows 'FTP' to properly select portions,
or re-size each of the font's characters to more closely match
the selected upload quality.
In some instances, if the 'scaling' is more than 60% the original
size, standard compression might produce better results.
More compression routines will be added in future releases.
---------
Requires:
---------
'PPDO' is required if you want to automatically 'powerpack' a printer
font file created with 'FTP'. However, 'PrinterFont' (which uploads
printer font files) can upload both standard and 'powerpacked' files:
this program is optional.
'Powerpacked' printer font files are usually less than 50% or more
than their original size!
-----------------------
Software Configuration:
-----------------------
The following variables (flags) are used:
SCREEN TO FRONT
USE PUBLIC SCREEN
INITIALIZE PRINTER
USE EXTENDED PRINTER PREFS
START: TOP OF PAGE
CLOSE: TOP OF PAGE
(Please refer to the help file(s) for 'SoftConfig' for more information.)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
FOR ADVANCED USERS
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------
Printer Font Files:
-------------------
Use the 'Create File' option to create special printer font files
within the automatically created 'FONTS:printer' directory. These
special fonts can then be quickly uploaded to your printer without
using 'FTP' to re-convert their Amiga bitmapped font counterparts.
The special 'PRINTERPREFS' program also uses these special printer
font files to initially set the default font when the printer is
first initialized.
--------------------
Two Fonts Qualities:
--------------------
If you printer's memory will allow, you could upload both the DRAFT
and LQ quality font for the Amiga bitmapped font selected without
resetting your printer. This would insure proper printing of text
in both draft & letter quality modes. However, most printers don't
allow more than one uploaded font to be present in memory at a time.
-------------------
Compugraphic Fonts:
-------------------
To upload a compugraphic font (in this release) to the printer,
first convert it to a 27 point (high) bitmapped font. This font can
then be uploaded to the printer since a duplicate bitmapped font
has been created.
-----------
Final Note:
-----------
'FKEY' can be used to 'launch' this program via pre-determined
keystroke(s).
