  5.     Wouldn't it be nice to print a text file in one of the many
  6.     available Amiga bitmapped fonts instead of draft courier or
  7.     one of the printers internal DRAFT or NLQ/ LQ fonts?  'FTP'
  8.     let's you do just that!  Imagine printing a text file in
  9.     an LQ CAMELOT font!  It's easy using 'FTP'.  'FTP' basically
  10.     converts, then uploads an Amiga bitmapped font to your printer:
  11.     Font To Printer.  'FTP' can also be used to 'toggle' your
  12.     printer back and forth between an uploaded font(s) or the
  13.     printer's internal fonts.

  111.     Before attempting to upload a font to your printer, be sure your
  112.     printer's internal RAM buffer is not allocated for incoming data.
  113.     Check your printer's manual for more information.

  119.     You can view a font before uploading it by 'activating' (placing a
  120.     check mark) beside the "Project/View" option: each time you select
  121.     this option, it will toggle back and forth.  The display window
  122.     will not open until a font has been selected.  The selected font
  123.     will be displayed in this window.  Use this option to view each
  124.     font before making your final decision.

  128.     Uploading:
  129.     ----------
  130.     To begin uploading the selected font, click on the "[ OK ]" gadget
  131.     (button) or press [RETURN].  Depending on the size of the font, and
  132.     the option selected, it could take 20 seconds or more to complete
  133.     the upload process.  If at anytime you cancel the upload, the
  134.     printer will be reset to use it's own internal character set.
  135.     However, be sure to fully reset the printer before attempting the
  136.     upload again.

  138.     If you only want to upload printable characters (ie., a-z, A-Z, 0-9
  139.     etc.,) then 'activate' the "Upload/Alpha Only" option.

  141.     If you want to create a special printer font file in the default
  142.     'FONTS:printer' directory, 'activate' the "Upload/Create File"
  143.     option.

  145.     To cancel uploading at any time, click on the "[ Cancel ]" gadget
  146.     (button).

  150.     Printing:

  152.     When printing out text files, make sure the quality of the uploaded
  153.     font (DRAFT or NLQ) matches the print quality (see DRAFT or LETTER
  154.     from the within the system preferences program 'PRINTER'). If not,
  155.     the printed characters will not look quite right.  This goes for
  156.     other programs that set the printer's quality mode directly.
  157.  
  158.     'FTP' will always default the upload quality to that of your
  159.     preferences setting.

  163.     Testing:

  165.     After uploading a font, you can test the quality by clicking on the
  166.     "[ Test Print ]" gadget (button).

  170.     Compression:

  172.     The compression routines allows 'FTP' to properly select portions,
  173.     or re-size each of the font's characters to more closely match
  174.     the selected upload quality.

  176.     In some instances, if the 'scaling' is more than 60% the original
  177.     size, standard compression might produce better results.

  179.     More compression routines will be added in future releases.

  185.     'PPDO' is required if you want to automatically 'powerpack' a printer
  186.     font file created with 'FTP'.  However, 'PrinterFont' (which uploads
  187.     printer font files) can upload both standard and 'powerpacked' files:
  188.     this program is optional.

  190.     'Powerpacked' printer font files are usually less than 50% or more
  191.     than their original size!

  214.     Printer Font Files:
  215.     -------------------
  216.     Use the 'Create File' option to create special printer font files
  217.     within the automatically created 'FONTS:printer' directory.  These
  218.     special fonts can then be quickly uploaded to your printer without
  219.     using 'FTP' to re-convert their Amiga bitmapped font counterparts.
  220.     The special 'PRINTERPREFS' program also uses these special printer
  221.     font files to initially set the default font when the printer is
  222.     first initialized.

  226.     Two Fonts Qualities:
  227.     --------------------
  228.     If you printer's memory will allow, you could upload both the DRAFT
  229.     and LQ quality font for the Amiga bitmapped font selected without
  230.     resetting your printer.  This would insure proper printing of text
  231.     in both draft & letter quality modes.  However, most printers don't
  232.     allow more than one uploaded font to be present in memory at a time.

  236.     Compugraphic Fonts:

  238.     To upload a compugraphic font (in this release) to the printer,
  239.     first convert it to a 27 point (high) bitmapped font.  This font can
  240.     then be uploaded to the printer since a duplicate bitmapped font
  241.     has been created.

  247.     'FKEY' can be used to 'launch' this program via pre-determined
  248.     keystroke(s).
